Tame the Thunder - Let's face it, pickleball bangers are a challenge to play against. They are often one-trick-ponies with one technique. Hit it hard.

Here are some quick tips to meet that challenge.

  • Spot the Swing: Watch for the telltale big backswing of a power hitter.
  • Defend Down Low: Lower your stance and widen your feet, ready for a hard drive.
  • Backhand Blockade: Use your backhand to block and redirect powerful shots.
  • Short Ball Strike: Be ready to pounce on short returns after a banger's miss.
  • Let It Go! If it's way out, let it fly and reset for the next play.

Three Things You May NOT Know About Pickleball

  1. Pickleball has been around for more than 50 years, originating in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, as a backyard pastime for families.
  2. The name has nothing to do with pickles and was not named after a dog. Instead, it was coined by Joel Pritchard's wife, who likened the sport's mix of elements to a "pickle boat" crew, assembled from leftover rowers.
  3. Pickleball, named the fastest-growing sport in America by NBC in 2014, has continued its rapid expansion, now boasting millions of players in the US and growing in popularity in Canada and Europe.
