A Little Known Pickleball History Fact
Most people know pickleball started in 1965, but here’s something many don’t realize: the game was originally created as a way to entertain families of all ages on a summer afternoon.
When Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum improvised the first version on Bainbridge Island, they intentionally lowered the net and used paddles so children and adults could play together.
From the very beginning, pickleball wasn’t about power — it was about participation. That spirit of “everyone can play” is still what makes it so special today.
